The wife and I are going to get a F-250 or 350 4 door short bed here within the next 6 months. My reasons are they look sweet and I need something that I can haul my Jeep to and from the trail and take the whole family camping. My wifs reason is she just wants a truck and what ever we get has to have four doors.
My Q's are,
We are going to by a used one, What are some things I need to look for?
What is the best year for what I am going to use this for?
What is the ideal trailer breaking system that I need to look for?
And any other things that you guys can think of that I didn't mention.

well, i would lean to a 2003 or down model. the 6.0L diesels are very problematic, we have a 6.0 and it just plain sucks ***. So, if you want a diesel, go with a 7.3L. My 7.3L is much better then the 6 liter. for a used vehicle (all dependent on how much $ you want to spend): check underbody/frame for rust. if it's a diesel, dont be worried about high mileage. i bought a 2002 with 70K and it is in MINT condition. i would limit my search at 120,000 miles. if you want the newer body style, it will be a 1999 or higher model. if you like the older style, it is 1995-1998. but the price of a 1998 will be more affordable. i prefer the new body style. try to find the newest model year that your finances will allow. how much are you going to be towing? if it is alot, i would invest in some gauges (transmission temp, turbo boost, and exhaust temp) to keep your engine in check, plus maybe a 4'' exhaust to keep the temperatures down. an exhaust brake would be a great modification to someone who hauls alot. it will extend the life of your brakes and will help slow you down faster. thats about all i have time for now, some more knowledgeable members should be chiming in here soon.
