Starter keeps turning in on position.

OK, so i was taking some volt readings from my ignition module on my 87 F350 with carburated 460 engine. Per my Haynes book i disconnected my 1 starter cable from its post on my solenoid so I could get reading from my voltmeter on the leads from the module without the starter turning. This all worked fine and I was able to diagnose the problem to my module. (improper ground)

However, reconnecting the cable back into the solenoid yeilded a separate problem that I am now stuck on. Now, the starter turns in both the on position and start position of my key ignition switch. Could I have ruined the solenoid?

My solenoid has 2 main terminal posts. 1 for the battery and the other for the starter. It also has and "I" connection and a "SW" connection. "SW" engages the solenoid to provide power to the starter. The wire leading to "SW" is receiving 11.8 volts in the ignitio ON position and 12.8 volts in the ignition START position. Is this voltage normal? If not what voltage is normal for the 2 positions and what may be causing this? Please help if possible.

Thankyou

there should be no voltage to the starter terminal in the run position.
are you doing a volt test with the wires connected?? if so disconnect and try again.
if no volts in run to the start wire disconnected, but there connected, try swapping the solenoid.
the proper volt readings to the start terminal is 0 in run, and 12 in start.
please note that by 12 volts, i mean whatever your battery volts is. it may be 11.8, or it may be 13.8. the important thing is that it should be 0 in run and powered in start.

Yes, I did disconnect the "SW" wire for the test. Its a small 12 ga wire and was running the volt test getting 11.8 in run and 13.8 in start. The volt meter was only connected to the small SW wire as it was disconnected.

My solenoid has an "I" terminal as well with one 12 ga wire connected to it. I'm not sure what it is here for.

the ignition terminal on the solenoid means nothing. it was probably changed somewhere along the past 18 years with an older style unit.
if you have 12 volts to the starter wire in run position, i would try changing the ignition switch to see if that is the problem. it may be out of adjustment a bit also.

Solved

Well, it turns out that it was a connector with the wire's insulation pulled back. I had to clip off the connector, buy some shrink tubing and reinsulated the exposed wires. Then I reinstalled the connector. Wahlah!

Thank you. I must have bumped into the connector while I was working. What a fluke.
