Question Fixiteveryday

97 4.0 x ohv engine broke end off crank in front of crank timing gear! Explorer. Got long block said 95 up! Transferred pan,timing cover,intake, mounts, exaust manifolds, valve covers ect. all fit fine! Then I tried to put in the distrubitor like cam pos. sensor housing. IT WILL NOT GO IN ALL THE WAY! Lacks 1/8 inch! Took off pan. Took off oil pump and shaft! STILL WILL NOT GO IN! Lacks 1/8 inch! Advanced parts/Auto zone shows same part numbers from 95-00, on oil pump, intermediate shaft and oil pump shaft (houses cam sensor). Looked on net same story! Called dealer, seems 95 had 2 different ones, 96-97 had one, 96-98 another! 1 of the 95 units had no sensor on top,1 did. CONFUSED! Only Ford has a better idea!!!! Never ran into things like this on any GM I've worked on. Ready to put in 5.0 V-8! What will I have to change? Is it worth it?

With it being a 97 its not that hard if you have all the engine parts and you can get the motor mounts at an parts store. It had the option of a 302 V-8.

If I put a 302 in my 97 explorer in place of 4.0 ohv V-6. Do I have to change bell housing on my auto 5 spd.? I know motor mounts dif. Ex. diff. Electronics dif. But will my computer work? Probably need CPU, Wiring harness, diff. bellhousing, motor for 97 up302, motor mounts. Hell! that would cost a fortune unless I bought wrecked (TOTALED) motor-trans with wiring harness ect still intact. Think I'll try finding that elusive oil pump driveshaft or CMP housing that will fit!! (97 won't fit 95-6 block!

Your choice, fix little V-6 or go for the power for a 302, you would also need a new computer and bellhousing. You can get the complete setup on ebay for around $900, find the right one and it will have everything you will need.
