I found this truck in a local junkyard and I cannot find any info on these. I'm sure it's pretty rare. I'm not sure what year it is, or what the engine is. I forgot to get any numbers off it for id purposes, but I can get them. I just figured I'd post these pics and see what you guys could come with for info. It is a NAPCO conversion, which I find to be odd, instead of the M-H. Let me know what you think. The last three pics are of my ongoing project.
I haven't talked to him about price yet. It seems he's keeping it intact and has had it for quite a while, so I'm hoping to pick it up at the end of this year. I bought my '66 F-100 4X4 from this same yard, and I'm in pretty good with the guy, so we'll see what happens. I'm just trying to get some info on the truck itself. I'm not familiar with y-blocks personally, but I was told by someone else he thought it was, too. So 2 votes for y-block!
The NAPCO conversion was typically done on GM products, but was also done on Fords and others. F100 to F350 Fords of the pre 1959 factory 4x4s were mainly M-H conversions, but they too were occasionally NAPCOs. Trucks larger than F250s were not factory 4x4s until late the 60s to early 70s. This is an unusual truck and would be an interesting one to see in running condition.
From the angle of the photo, the grille is either '61 or '62. The engine does not appear to be a 292. Looks like a big-block and it lacks the 292 exhaust cross-over. No PCV valve, so it's a pre-'63 big-block? But if it's not a 292 it's not original.
It's a nice beast of a truck. Good find.
It looks almost exactly like mine, although it could be a 62. The engine is a 332HD. They only put them in trucks for four years, so they are pretty scarce. The extra hose going to the dist and the vacuum gaget on the right of the carb is the (infamous)govenor mechanism. Major parts like the crankshaft, intake, and heads seem to be in high demand on this website. I would love to have a 4WD conversion like that one.
