Thanks! This has rapidly gone from an educational exercise to an exercise in futility. I think I found the intermittent, so now emissions light is always on while running. This should be the proper state for a cobbled system. Still no trouble codes though.

Loading logs on Sunday, it worked fine, but went to park it after and the timing had suddenly changed to where it wouldn't start. The dizzy hadn't moved. And the battery's run down a couple times too. I'm thinking this new behavior and the intermittent are connected somehow. Obviously, I have many problems, "fixing" one thing only uncovers more. I haven't spent serious time with it since the carb overhaul.

This has the "E-core" high voltage coil. The place I bought the distributor at said it should work, but I doubt he really knew one way or the other. I do have another coil or two I can try. I do know I need to make sure there's a ballast resistor, I believe the E-coil does use one but will verify before I make the swap.

Thanks for the info on the ported vacuum for the advance, that hadn't occurred to me, though I know I've read about it before.
