I recently purchased a 2002 reg cab SuperDuty and want to get a cheap tonneau for the bed. Does anyone have experience w/ the roll-up style vinyl tonneaus? Those seem to be the cheapest ones I can find, but if they're crap then it wouldn't be worth it. Realistically a cap would be best but I don't have $1000 laying around right now. Do the roll-up style tonneaus work okay? Don't fly off at speed? Don't flap while driving and make lots of noise?
Swenson,
I don't know where you live but my experiance with soft covers is that they stink when it comes to snow load, also there is no security benifits. I just put a Fold-A-Cover on my truck after doing a lot of research and I think it was an exellent choice. Unfortunatley it is a bit higher than the price range you mentioned, I paid about 575.00
In 1995 I purchased an Access Rollup vinyl cover. Best vehicle mod purchase / value ever for me. Here's the history:
Purchased for 1995 F-150 4x4 SC reg bed
Modified for 1997 F-150 SC 4x4 reg bed
Placed on 2000 F-150 SC 4x4 reg bed
Modified for 2002 F-150 SC 4x4 long bed with bed tool box
Modified for 2004 F-250 SC 4x4 long bed with bed tool box
10 years old (almost 11), 5 trucks and the top still looks new. Original investment $ 400.00 in 1995 plus two trips to canvas shop at $ 75.00 each for modification.
It has cross bars to help with snow but, there is a huge difference between what I consider snow in TX, and what you consider snow in MA.
I've got a foldup cover and it had 6 inches of snow on it several times this past winter. Held up extremely well and not showing any signs of size change or discoloration.

You know of course that "cheap" won't last and you will wind up replacing it.
IMHO, it's better to put some money into a good one like Retrax, and spend it once for something that will last as long as you own the truck.
I had one of those roll up snap type tonneau covers. They are a pain to deal with and sag in no time.
Better to save your money and buy a good one.
I have had the Retrax for 4 years now, and it looks and more importantly - works as good today as the day I bought it.
I have a Literider and love it. I'm moving it to my new truck. Heavy snow load and absolute security could be an issue but I haven't had problems with it yet. I leave it open when i have nothing back there so no one is tempted to cut it open.
I have Extang "Full Tilt" covers on my trucks, I love them. If it's security your looking for, then vinyl is not for you. Full Tilt covers cost $300-$350, I had my old Extang (not a full tilt) for 10 years and it held up fine, snow load, sun fade, sagging, etc. was not a problem. When I bought the full tilt cover for my 77 I put the old cover on my mud truck and it's still working fine for me today. -Ed
