I plan on going 2005 F250 crewcab 4x4 5.4 5 spd.auto. Has anyone towed with the new 5.4? Is it satisfactory? I need to tow occasionally (every 6 to 8 weeks)
Is there any compelling reason to wait for a 2006? Is integral satellite radio available in 2006s?
The 5.4 is underpowered, IMO. It's not great in an F-150/Expedition, so it's really not good in a Super Duty. There have been lots of discussions about V8 vs. V10 - boiled down, the V10 will get roughly equal gas mileage and will give you power when you need it. With either engine, you need to give lots of consideration to your rear-end gearing (for instance, you need the 4.30 gearing with the 5.4 to have any power at all). The V10 is only a $600 or so option, so why not?
I'm a diesel fan, so I'll ask if you've considered that option. Lots of up-front cost, but the power is wonderful. There have also been plenty of gas vs. diesel holy wars, so I'll let you search those up.
Think about the transmission as well... if you like a stick, then OK, but the TorqShift is an incredible auto transmission.
'05 ordering is long-since gone, and '06s shouldn't be around for much longer. '07s, with the new 6.4L twin-turbo diesel engine (of which I wouldn't want the first model year) come out in January.
If you can find the V10 in a vehicle you like I would certainly go that route. I've driven a couple 5.4's and was not impressed (power or fuel economy). I love the 10 for all it has to offer and suprised I get the economy I do. (around 12.5 c/h) A good buddy of mine has a 5.4 150 and can't get over 14 mpg. GO FIGURE.
Also with the rebates they're offering now on the 05 I don't think the 06 offers enough to wait.
Ok, I'll counter. I have exactly the truck that the original poster asked about. I tow a 6500 (fully loaded) trlavel trailer. The 5.4 performs very well. I was towing with a F150 Screw 4.6. It too performed sufficiently. Granted I live in the deep south with few hills. But I wouldn't hesitate to take the rig into the mountains.
Having said that, I did want a V10 when I bought the F250. Finding V10s down here is very hard, especially the '05s.
if you want gas the v10 is the only way to power a s/d. if you want long term and return for your money the only way is psd.
the 5.4 while a very good motor it's shy of power in the almost 8k super duty. and is so close to matching the v10 in mpg's i don't worry. but when i want to geddie up and buggy my v10, it's right there.
Thank you everyone for your input. I bought a 2005 F250 4x4 crewcab 5.4/auto XLT with everything I wanted except running boards (go figure). I would have gone for a V10 but couldn't find one that had the options I wanted. Most of my driving will be highway without towing so mileage is important. I would get 13 to 15 mpg out of my '99, depending on how I drove (65 or 85). The extra length of a crewcap will make it harder to parallel park but the kids are complaining about the size of the supercab back seat. oh well..... Thanks all!
Economic factors are converging...gas prices are skyrocketing with no relief in sight and the '07 F250 is just around the corner...I think there will be a lull in '06 F250 sales during the latter portion of this year and into next year, prompting Ford to offer incentives that don't exist today with a lot of '05s still on the lots. Ford will likely limit '06 production to prevent a saturated market. The $3000 rebate on '05s only offsets depreciation when compared to an '06; you're really not getting anything out of it.
If you can hold off for 6 months, you'll probably get a good deal on either a leftover 05 or a 06. Refiners are probably changing over to produce more heating oil which will drive up diesel prices and keep gas prices going up some too. I think the demand for all superduties will go down by the 1st of the year. I see to many large trucks of all brands being used by single drivers just going to work empty around metro Atlanta, GA. Buying habits will probably change when it costs over $10.00 a day just to look good going to work and back.
It already costs me $9.15 a day to go round trip to work--IF, I carpool with the wife. If not, we're spending about $16 a day fuel, just to work and back.
Now, before I had the SD, people loved to drive halfway over the double yellow head on at me. Now they stay in their lane--most of them. It's worth the money. I'd drive a dump truck if I could afford that!

Ha! Funny you should mention SuperDuties getting respect. In my neck of the woods we have a number of 4-way stop intersections, and there's always people pushing the envelope. First thing I noticed after I got an '05 F350 dually was how much nicer the other drivers became... I go. They yield. Not a problem!
