steering column issues. need help diagnosing

I think the one i have now is shot... i dont know if it can be rebuit or replaced.

when i pull up on the steering wheel, there is about 1/4"-1/2" of play. When i grab the steering wheel and pull/push it has about 1/4" of play. It also makes a noise when i turn the wheel, like there is a bearing that needs replced.

Is there something that i can do to repair my column?
I am thinking of getting a new one, is there any place that i can purchase one? (other than a junk yard)

There are roller bearings in the top of the column, I don't know how easy they are to replace though.
