caddy headgasket?

alright to make a long story short, my parents came out to idaho from iowa to visit me and my family. on the way out the temp on there 97 cadillac deville went up to 250 degrees, while going up hills with the a/c on. they got out here and driving around town and on the flats it runs about 212 to 225 degrees. we started to go to the mountains today and got to the top of the first big climb with the a/c on and the temp went up to 260 and the dash was flashing change oil and turn off engine immediately. we pulled over and let it sit for a little bit. we took it to the local chevy dealer and they called it a bad headgasket with a repair bill of 3800 dollars. my parents were looking at getting a different car, so he said i get to keep it and do whatever i want with it and they are going to fly back home. just wondering if this really sounds like a headgasket, it seems to drive around on the flats just fine no overheating or anything. wouldnt mind changing it myself and making a little money on it. any help would be appreciated.

Do a compression test on it. It's very possible it's just in need of a tune-up. If it was missing it could overheat. given the fact that it did overheat it indicates that something failed in the cooling system, and may have damaged more than you think. If its a 4.1 or 4.9 it's mostly aluminum and you may have warped a head....
