Power steering leak
Been leaking power steering fluid, probably from the pump. Has anyone either repaired a leaky pump or replaced one? Just want to get some ideas before I tear into it.
Thanks!
I hope that it is nothing serious, please look very closely to ensure where the Power Steering Fluid is leaking.
My Story of Leaking Fluid:
I have a 90 Ranger with about 120,000 miles on it and I have not replaced the Pump. However I have had to replace the Power Steering unit “Twice”. First the original pitman shaft seals (outer & inner if my memory is correct) were both chewed by rust on the pitman shaft.
This may have been caused by me Power Washing the underside of the Truck and spraying the immediate area (Truck had about 60,000 miles on it).
I replaced it with a Lifetime Warranty Unit which lasted about 40,000 miles (again, the lower seal was leaking). This time the pitman shaft was not rusted as badly.
I was wondering if I caused this too because when I shut off the Ignition I would always move the Steering Wheel until It locked. This may have caused an extra amount of continuous stress on the shaft & seals (because I did this all the time).
I exchanged it for another unit, which I am still using today. Anyhow, I have a great Power Steering Pump
Still going well after 15 years.
I just wanted to let you and others know of my experience.
Good Luck
Please come back soon and let us know what you find.
Gary
I don't mind adding fluid, but it is getting progressively worse and I'm a little worried about the suspension parts and bushings that its leaking on.
I'll report back with my findings.
