What to do?

My father has a really good looking/nice 78' ford f150 with a 400 and he told me if I bought a new motor I could drive it. Im pretty sure I could have a wild truck if I spent 3 grand on a new motor and a few bolt ons but I also know a guy with a 76' 4x4 w/460 for sale (in decent condition) that I could buy cheaper than the motor would cost on my dads truck. So im wondering what all you guys think, Ive wanted something of my own for a while so im leaning towards buying my own. Im 15 years old so one thing im worried about is the gas milage on these 460's?

It's all up to you, but the gas mileage is going to fall in the 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other...

Honestly I've seen very little mileage difference between the 460 and 400. Your mileage will have to do more with the way the engine is carbed and how you drive it than anything. This is not to say "Don't get the 400" but I wouldn't make a decision for one over the other based on fuel efficiency. That being said, if it were me I'd go with the 76. Spend a few $$ and you can really wake it up or do some cool stuff with your suspension/tires. You didn't mention if the 78 was a 4x4 but you did say the 76 was. You can never go wrong with 4wd.

Thanks for the input, the 78 is a 2wd btw. The way gas prices keep going, I dont think Ill be able to afford either one :-( I might just have to settle for a 99' ranger. My father told me forsure that I was paying for gas and insurance.

I think paying for gas every month on a vehicle YOU OWN is cheaper than making a loan PAYMENT & paying for gas & paying more for insurance on a newer vehicle that will depreciate to the same value as the 76/78 in three years anyway.

BUY OLDER
TO OWN IT
-
WHEN A TRUCK IS NEW
IF YOU HIT A BOULDER
INSURANCE WILL DIS-OWN IT
WOULDN"T YOU?

I get about 10-12mpgs driving an taking it EASY in my Bronco with 400(no wheeling)(with wheeling it hurts to look at milage). My buddy has a F250 with a 460 an gets 8-10 driving faily easy.again with wheeling, it dropps. Unless you could get a early modle 4wd truck with smaller engine for the same price, you'll end up paying more than just paying $2000 for a 78 or so 4wd. Insurance is cheap on these trucks, and they are cheap to buy and upgrade. Just pay gas and you end up saving more in the long run, trust me.

Thanks for the input guys, I think id rather have my own truck anyways, my dad wont help me much in fixing up his, he acts like he wants to get it done, but never helps me do it. I was worried about the gas milage because Im paying for gas and insurance, and insurance for a 16 year old around here is at or over $100 a month for Any vehicle.

I find that hard to belive for a newly lisenced driver to have to pay the same amount of insurance on a 76(30 year old truck) over a brand new 2005 truck. If your parents would buy you a new vehical, then I can see how you would save money, but I you buy a 10k 2003 or so and pay higher insurance and a little less gas, you loose alot of money over a $1,500 78 truck with cheap insurance and just gets about 5-10 mpg less.

So $20 more a fill up(older), vs. $300 monthly payments and higher insurance(newer) I just don't see how you think you'd save money spending thousands more to get 5-10 mpg.
