hello from a New Guy
first post and all, thought i'd say hello (and before anybody suggests that i read all the guidelines, trials of a first time builder, etc- done it as i've been lurking for a little while).
just took a 57 styleside longbed off a friend who was relocating to Michigan.
this is my first real project. i can turn a wrench ok on the regular vehicles in our garage, but this is where the real fun begins. the part i'm looking forward to the most is the ol' "but honey, if i buy this used mig welder it will save money in the long run" conversation.
truck was originally from oregon and has been sitting in my friend's driveway in loveland, colorado since 1988.
here's my plan: keep the inline6 with 3-on-the-tree, update engine with better spark and exhaust. maybe go for a full rebuild at some point- not sure yet. saw somewhere on the forum that somebody has massaged their 6 to over 300hp. i'm not thinking of going all the way to 300, but definitely more than stock.
replace brake lines, swap front drums for discs.
add seat belts.
relocate gas tank to the frame rails somewhere.
repair body rot and paint after driving for a while. probably find a bed in better shape.
i'll post some pics to the gallery soon, as well as give the info for the registry
i'm looking down at the nice hole in the skin of my finger from attaching the tow bar to the homemade bumper and wondering how many more of those i have to look forward to.
look forward to hearing all opinions and experiences from everybody.
Welcome to the 1948-1960 Ford Truck nuthouse.
Since you've been lurking, I won't tell you about the regulars - you obviously have no class or you wouldn't have decided to join this group.
The plan sounds great. You have a view of what you want in the end and that's a huge step in the right direction. Fire away with quesions and we'll do our best to answer them with at least a little useful information.
Again, Welcome!!

Don't worry about the skin - it'll grow back and if it doesn't just fiberglass over the hole
My wife calls my truck 'Wendy'. Likes to tell people, "yeah, he's out in the garage fooling around with Wendy." I'm so glad my wife understands this compulsion.

'ello by-the-by & Welcome.
That would be my 300 I-6 w/ 400fpt, 300hp, that is now a 312 I-6, not a 223 I-6 that you have or should have & it is the FPT that counts, not the HP, 'cause if you can not get them off the line & keep them eating your dust, this is where the HP comes in by-the-by, what is the sense.
Good on ya', mate, for wishing to keep the exterior of the Olde Girl Stock & just Up Dating the Moving Parts for Safety Reasons.
