My dad just gave me his 1978 F-250 4x4 SuperCab Custom Camper Special and it's got a few issues to sort out. I love this truck. My dad bought it new when I was 4 years old. I learned to drive in it.
Anyway, when I drive it at speeds less than about 60 km/h, a loud repetitive clunking sound comes from the area of the passenger-side front wheel. The clunk matches the wheel revolutions, and goes away when you apply the brake.
I've had a couple people tell me the caliper is sitting lose and gets lifted by the rotor every time the wheel goes around, then comes crashing down. It's very loud, and I'm worried something's going to break. My dad had this looked at when he had the truck and was told that the shims that are supposed to limit the caliper's movement keep falling out because there's too much wear where they're supposed to sit.
It's got a Dana 44 front axle with dual-piston calipers. What's the fix for this? Does it involve installing new calipers? Can I do this in my driveway with basic tools?
it dosent hurt to check wheel bearings but i have a 78 f 250 4x4 check the caliper where it rides on on the body they will wear down and make a clack noise check that
hope this helps
bad 78 f 250
