This is my first post so Hello to all. I have a '62 F-100 stepside with a straight 6 and three on the tree. I have had the truck about 10 years now and just getting the time and space to work on it. I am picking up a 5.0 EFI HO and auto trans out of a wrecked Mustang for really cheap (neighbors kids and been sitting in their barn for about 2 years). I was thinking about putting it in my '62 after I rebuild it, but I am not sure on how to replace a carbed motor with a fuel injected one. I know you have to have a computed, sensors and all that fun stuff. What I need to know is how to wire in the computer and what to do about fuel supply. I don't really want use the auto trans but rather a 5 speed what kind should I go with? If anyone has done this if you can offer any advice it would be great. Also if the swap looks like too much of a pain is there anyway of removing the fuel injection intake and replacing it with a carbed one. Does the heads or pistons have to be changed?
Big project! This is not a project for beginners unless you have a reliable shop nearby. The most significant issues will be steering and stopping this truck after you have new power under the hood. Do your research and develop a plan and a logical budget. I think the engine installation regardless of transmission or fuel supply system is going to be the simple part. More difficult issues will be the frame, steering, brakes and suspension. Post back! We can help.
Thanks for the link to the article Mike. Looks like it will be very helpful. I am planning on changing the braking system anyway from the single outlet master to a double. the steering I haven't really got into yet I kind of would like to have power steering but not absolutely necessary. Any advice on how to accomplish the power steering? Also does anyone know if or were I can get a kit or any other gas tank to move the stock gas tank from behind the seat to under the truck. Does any other vehicles tank fit somewhere under there?
A lot of folks put a Mustang tank between the rails in the rear. I haven't gotten to that yet, thinking of using the Crown Vic tank, if I can get it in place. As far as steering and brakes, I'm using the entire chassis from the CV, so only need to figure out the steering column mount. Have to get the cab fully mounted first, tho.
Someone once posted this link - https://www.ford-trucks.com/tech.htm -
and I have found it very helpful for my '66. Probably some issues, but the article on putting in a mustang tank is a great starting point for your own fabrications. Good luck with engine and all... others on here really know how help.
Okay I picked up the motor and luckily it's not setup and I got most of the wiring to go with. Now just need the computer and the other odds and ends. Does any one have any good ideas on building the motor. I would like to have a little bit more ponies than stock 5.0. What would a good mid range cam be? I don't really know how much I can do with it being EFI. Also who has done the drum to disk conversion? I would like disk in the front. It seams like all the post talk about trucks newer than 62. And I think they changed the front axle in like 64?. If anyone has done it on the straight axle where did you get the parts? And what about changing the master cylinder from the single outlet to double?
