It could be a defective sensor, a broken wire or a fuse.
I have dual tanks in my 82 E100 Econoline that I am converting and only the front will show when flipping the toggle. My rear tank indicator shows "empty" although I know it is full and get gas when switched over. In my case, I am certain it is a wire to track down....that or the float has gone bad.
I am beginning to think that this is a common problem for 2 tank setups in these vans because when I switch to the rear tank, it does not register on the gauge either. When we gutted our conversion van (1989 E250), we must have jostled the failing wire or something because it did work a couple of times but now it is dead again. So in my case, I believe that there is a broken wire that is causing the problem.
I have a 1991 Ford Econoline Conversion Van. I went to get Gas Today and noticed the Guage no longer works. Does anyone have any ideas why it quit?
What does the gauge show?
If it shows more-than-full, you have a broken wire to the sender or the sender ground is broken;
if it shows empty, your senderwire has a short to ground.
Reason: the gauge shows empty when the sender is about 25 Ohm and the gauge shows full with a sender resistance of about 145 Ohm.
If the gauge is OK, then this should indicate a short in the senderwire.
The sender is in the tank, and as far as I know built into the fuelpump assembly.
Unsure if the sender is replacable on its own.
In any event you would have to drop the tank, to get at this, but before you do this, check the yellow/white wire to the sender.
You can get at this by pulling the harness (in ribbed plastic/ convoluted cover) from between the tank and the lefthand chassisrail, about halfway down the length.
You could temporarily cut this wire and your gauge should show over-full as there is now an high resistance, IF the wire this far is OK.
Measure the resistance in the wire to the tank, and with a full tank this should read 145 Ohm, if not, the problem is definately in the tank.
