I recently completed an installation of a power antenna on the RH cowl, but my location is a couple inches forward of the stock location. The previous owner had one of those short rubber antennas that was bent over from being whacked by the opening hood. The new one I installed actually came from JC Whitney's a few years ago and i had to modify the base to match the outer cowl surface. I started with an old black plastic shift **** and turned it down slightly smaller and smoothed the surface with 500 and 1000 grit sand paper. To match the contour, I used 60 and 240 grit disc's on an angle die grinder. It ended up fitting so snug that I did not need a rubber gasket. When the antenna is retracted it sticks up about 2 inches. It will be wired into the radio to extend when power goes to the radio. Sorry it is not in my gallery yet. I owe the gallery an update after several months of assembly.
Good point *****. I am now considering a simple toggle switch mounted inside the 3" deep glove box (Vintage Air) that would interrupt power to the antenna motor. That would be another safety feature along with having only one ignition key.
I have a power antenna in my 55 panel stock location. One wierd problem with it is that my new Vintage Air kit hits the inside guts of the unit, and will surely rattle when I get the truck back on the road. Small point, but worth remembering. I know you asked about a 56, and the 56 hole is in a different relative location, but I thought I'd mention it anyway, for what it's worth.
for anyone who may be interested, there is a very good inside mounted antenna available from Dakota Digital. They work very well and are totally out of sight, in more ways than one.
My plan is to have the forward tilt hood so hitting the antenna should not be a problem. However one that is totally hiddden may be a better choice. Thanks guys
