I have what I think is a lifter ticking. It is only at idle, when I increase rpm a little it stops, so htat leads me to believe that the lifter aint pumpin up till the revs get a little higher. No loss of power, nothing bad what so ever, but that tick is LOUD! Will it hurt the engine to run it like that?? Listened with the stethoscope(sp) and it is comming from the pass side from the rear of the valve cover. What can/should I do to fix it?? Short of pullin the valve cover off and replacin all of 'em, is there somethin that I can add to the oil(I know, im not a fan of additives either) to free it up? Ive heard about adding ATF, MMO and various other things. Anyone else have the same prob??
Dont automatically assume that it is a lifter. Which V8 do you have? If its a 351 then the exhaust manifold gaskets are notorious for going bad around the rearish exhaust ports, causing a tick. How many miles are on your engine, etc? More info would be helpful.
Its a 302 with.......251500 miles on it. hehehe, thats alot. I dont think its the exhaust manifold, I fixed the crack in it so it should'nt be bad. It just started, and its perty loud. Once I increase the rpm a very small amount the ticking stops, a lifter not pumping up is what comes to mind for me. Am I wrong??
I didn't read that right. If its loud at idle, id say a lifter. Pull the valve cover off. If I remember right the 302 is set up like my 351 and the intake manifold smuthers that valve cover so have fun. I agree with Tim, you might get outta this lucky.

Handyman-
Although I'm not the original poster. I've got a slight tick at start-up on my 94' F-150, 351, 66,000 miles on it... it sounds just like the exhaust leak I had on my S-15 and quiets up after 5 min. or so of running.
Since the factory exhaust manifold gaskets are suspect.. is there a better source to replace these? Any info you have would be helpful.
It's not terrible right now but, I want to get after it before it 20° outside.
Sounds like from valve train stuff, lifter, rocker, spring. Hopefully can just tighten-up rocker nut a bit. Of course will need to remove upper intake manifold, just did mine 2 days ago. Good Luck.
Oh yea one more thing I forgot to mention, If going to remove upper intake, the middle inner bolt is a torx, unlike the 1/2 inch other 5 bolts. Can'not remember which size a 30 I think works.

What do you mean by a better source to replace em? Do you want some tips on how to get the bolts out without breakin any or what? Be a little more specific and I'll help ya out as much as ya need buddy. Feel free to call me Chad.

DAJ.
Its a T-40 but you need a long 1/4 inch drive with extension for clearance
I added soem MMO to the oil, it seems to have stopped most of the valvetrain noise. I'm not a big fan of additives myself, but the trucks off the road soon for college(got dads car) and I plan on collecting parts and fixing the ol girl up. Prob rebuild the whole top end, or just buy a engine block and build that up. Either way, the trucks gonna emerge a whole lot nicer and better running this spring summer. Thanks fer yalls help!

Chad-
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was wondering if there was an aftermarket manufacturer of exhaust gaskets that folks preferred since the OEM ones are known for goin' bad relatively quickly.
Or do ya simply have to change them frequently?
On my S-15 the gaskets held fine but, both exhaust manifolds cracked on me over time.
Well to be honest I dont think a brand of gasket matters. Thats just me though. As for it being a gasket, Not sure if thats the problem. Buddys 97 F-250 HD had the same deal you have now, and then it got worse and worse to the point where it ticked all the time. Took the manifold off in two pieces. Not a pretty sight lol.
