ive got an 83 stepside with no tail lights. i have turn and brake, cut nothinh with headlights on except those. is there a wirei need to hunt down or a bad switch ?
First thing to do with any light problems is to check your grounds front and rear.
BUT since the brake and taillight are in the bulb (dual filament bulb), and since your healights are working i suspect it is a bad wire, but not a ground (check them anyways, you'd be surprised what you might find), first thing to do is check the wires at the taillight and work forward check for a loose/cut wire, be sure to be using a test light along the way, this will help narrow the problem down faster as it will tell you where you have power too, i'm guessing that it will either be at the taillight or right at the back behind the rear tires where road debris can get at the wires.
If your switch was bad you'd be having issue's with the headlight at night.
I just spent several hours last night with a simlar problem, and it ended up being just the ground. It is individual, not with all the other plugs. For some reason the factor ground wasn't going to work, so I used the trailer ground wire supplied and now my tail lights are brighter than ever!
