I travle several hours to go hunt or fish in my truck and I usually leave around 1:30-2:00 in the morning after going to bed around 12:00 the night before and either hunt or fish most of the day, and then drive back home after. My pipes have never made me fatigued.
But that's just me I actually like to lisen to them when I'm accelerating, and other things like that.
I used to drive a Rice Rocket (Acura Integra) with an aftermarket race engine, headers and 3" exhaust with a Brullen muffler.. THAT was loud, especially when pushing 7500 RPM's.. I loved it. So i guess its just "To Each His Own" Sometimes i felt like i wanted to put the stock muffler on, sometimes i wanted it louder.
I think what i had in mind when i started this thread, is when i mentioned i wanted my truck to sound like a V8 was; has anyone heard the new Nissan 5.6L in one of their trucks, or even some of the bigger Dodge engines, like the HEMI. Well when they stomp on the gas, you can definately "hear" the V8 roaring out the stock tailpipe, as opposed to what sounds like blowing through a straw. I just wanted it to sound a little more aggresive so to speak. Anyhow, i too wouldnt mind a pair of headers, 1 instead of 4 cats, and a set of dual pipes. That would Rock.
Since when does someone asking a tech question turn into a debate on personal opinon? I joined this site to talk good things about a damn good truck, if you want to preach about how you hate noise, go some where that people actually care.

Just about every time someone asks a tech question, it turns into a debate on personal opinion. I think most everyone joined this forum because they are Ford truck enthusiasts and we all have a right to state our opinion on the thread of our choice as long as we stay within the guidelines. Falsely claiming that someone is preaching and should go away just because they don't agree with your own ideas is not cool.
One persons tail pipe noise is anothers music. Sometimes another truck goes by and I lower the window and turn the radio down.............. who knows, could be a bassani lurking under there.
Its a good thing there are lots of different flavors of F150's to choose from, and more importantly, "aftermarket items".
I don't think Ford will offer twin pipes out the rear till someone else does, those Titans and Dodges (not the Vipers), are getting good/louder stock sound with only one fat pipe right now.
what mechanic in their right mind would say that a quality performance exhaust won't make a difference?
An honest one is my guess. I have put custom cat back systems on both of my trucks and while a dyno may show a change in horsepower I haven't noticed an increase. As for mileage, maybe a mile more per gallon on the f250 and nothing on the f150. As always your results may vary.
Framerboy, I'm not tryin to bust ya! But Honestly.... You mentioned you didnt notice an increase! BUT let's see, you just said the DYNO showed a change....... and you also admitted that you get maybe a mile or more per gallon.
1 mile per gallan x 30 gallons = 30 miles per fill up more
30 miles per fill up x 52 fill ups a year = 1560 extra miles per year
My Truck get's 16mpg if I'm lucky....... so an extra 1560 miles = 97.5 gallons
97.5 gallons x $2.50 = $243.75
So I guess I could assume If I upgrade my muffler and I ONLY do as well as you (1 or moreextra mpg) that would ammount to $243.75 saving per year!
I noticed considerable power difference in my F-250 with a Flowmaster... Never dynoed but I could feel the difference and hear the difference. FPIK should be coupled with the exhaust upgrade.
Hey Hardcase, no offense taken. I said a dyno MAY show a change. I didn't pay to dyno either truck. You make a good point about the muffler change on my f250 though, one that I hadn't considered.
well I'm 32 yrs old and Personally I like my music loud, but I do it with having respect for others in mind. At redlights I turn it down when I pull in my subdivision I turn it down.As far as my exhaust goes I went with the SI/DO flowmaster 40 series with 4 in tips straight out the back. Its not to loud just has a nice little rumble to it.
Ggarraahn If you really think that ford made this truck the absolute best that it can be I have to ask the question why is it that you can see engine dyno test that show that small simple mods can make an improvement in how these trucks run??
What you have to remeber is that when ford made these trucks they made them with the entire public in mind young pp,l middle age ppl, and old ppl. Lets look at the transmissions Everything I have ever read or been told by Highly qualifed and respected transmission techs is that it is acutally more harmful to the tranny the way car companies set them up they slip in to the next gear instead of just snapping in. slipping leads to friction which leads to heat which leads to wear. reason they do this is for the simple fact that Joe Schmoe the older guy doesn't want his 35k truck slamming thru the gears he wants that nice soft shift so they make these trucks with ALL ppl in mind not for the best performance they can get from the trucks. Do you really believe that 300 horses are the best this baby can do??
I don't know what the big infatuation is with noisy exhaust systems. Between pickup owners and their flowmasters, ricers/posers and their fart cans, and harley owners and their straight pipes, its just noisy and irritating. There's a term for it - its called noise pollution. If I wanted to listen to that, I'd go to a nascar race.
Thank goodness the F150 is so quiet with the windows rolled up. As for me, I have much better things to do with my money then flush it down the toilet for an infinitessimal perceived (if you are lucky) slight HP gain.
i agree with you.i just got back from maine on vacation, about 800 miles and there is no way that i would want to listen to that drone for that long.however i did change my exhaust to a gibson single cat back, but it's quiet.i like the quiet smooth ride.too each they're own!
for the people comparing a rice rocket motor with exhaust to a V8 with exhaust, i have one thing to say...apples and oranges. Four bangers have never been pleasing on the ears, unless it's classic large displacement ferrari motor. and comparing a V8 with exhaust (albiet not straight pipe with open chamber mufflers) to a harley davidson is absurd. Harley's hurt when they go by. It's not fatigue, it's dangerous.
Transamm said it best. These trucks are designed for the general public. As far as opinion goes, you guys that want quiet, stick with the restrictive stock system, for the others, enjoy all the other options at your disposal!!!! And by all means, use the wealth of information on this site before spending any money.
I have the 4.6 motor & had a magnaflow cat -back system SI/SO installed yesterday and it does add a little on the low end and definitely on the top end.
I have an AF-1 intake to add this week so I am curious to see what that feels like.
These are the only engine mods to date. Other additions include leather steering wheel cover, Bedrug, Leer bed lid.
I am looking forward to adding a programmer to the mix in the next year but I'm not sure what the best one is yet for my SCREW.
