Okay i have this f250 4x4 460cid.
have'nt really looked or read on how to change out the power
steering pump, just know its mounted to a large braket assy
and im wondering if i have to remove the whole thing or can
you get the pump off without doing so. Does the pully pry
off to get to the 3 (i think) bolts holding the thing on.? And
sure i could look real close and figure it out but this is much
more fun getting input from someone that may have done
this before. Thanks first.
I don't remember off the top of my head because I'm not using the old Ford pump any more but I believe you have to remove the bracket that the pump is bolted to. Removal of the pulley requires a special tool. If you don't have one just run it by any automotive shop. They should be able to do it in about 2 minutes. Then you can remove the bolts and swap the bracket onto a new pump.
Like i said had'nt really looked hard, but shoot i was at least hoping the pulley had a bolt to hold it on, well i guess since
i have to remove the brkt suppose i'll get ride of the a/c pump
at the sametime and all the other a/c stuff. Real quick is it
possible to remove the pulley while the pump is still in the truck connected to the brkt??
to the
Wonder if NAPA has the same set up as autozone? They just could'nt make it easy, ford that is, but then again it would'nt
be a ford if it was easy. Gonna start my research for the best
deal.
You can buy a power steering pump pulley puller (say that 10x fast) that will work on many vehicles (Ford and GM included) at Advance Auto Parts for less then $20.00.
Im pretty sure the bracket has to come off in order to get the pump off of it. Does the bracket do a full 360 around the pulley shaft, enclosing it? If so, the pulley must come off to get the pump off- Im sure that you know this already. On mine (new ford pump, however, and diesel block) the radiator & rad brackets get in hte way of the pulley puller tool wo that it may not be used while in the truck. My bracket was extremely easy to remove though. Just 3 bolts and the PS lines. Id just pull the bracket...
Thats okay if just three of the bolts have to be removed cuz looks
like theres more than that, and im probably seeing things anyhow
thats normal. The thing leaks, not much, but enough, and since i
cant see where its coming from im assuming its got a hair line crack or seal going. And in the long run its a new part for my new
motor soon.
The pully can be removed with the pump still in the truck. The tool is a sleeve that fits into the groove you'll see in the raised part of the pulley right around the shaft. Then you torque a bolt that will pull the pulley off. It's a simple tool, can be bought for cheap. You also need a tool to reinstall the pulley on a new pump. Sometimes they'll have both tools built together, sometimes you need to get a separate one to reinstall it.
