oil filter question...

oil filter question...
I bought a used '05 250sd with 6.0 psd.
We changed the oil and filter today and noticed the filter we bought was different than what was in the truck.
The old filter has the same size hole in the top as the bottom...and also has a hat and shaft snapped into the oil filter cap.
We removed the hat and shaft by simply pulling it out of the oil cap hole (it was snapped in like the filter) and the new filter snaped into the cap...all is good.
Why the different filter?
any ideas?
