I changed the gear oil in my NP 435 with Super tech GL 5 85w- 140. Now it binds comming outa low and will not downshift to 2nd above 10mph it clunks(no grinding). Clutch adjustment to no avale. I WAS running Coastal 85w 90 which I believe is GL 4 rated. Is it just the gear oil making this happen
Dustin
Go to a thinner oil as it will get worse towards winter. They seem to shift best around 70 wt gear oil or 45 wt motor oil. 50 wt motor is the same as 90 gear oil but without the high sulfur for impact and shear protection. I ran 90 wt gear oil mixed with Honda's racing transmission oil ( like 20 wt) a high shear gear oil with anti foam and oxidation additives. Thin enough for the synchros to work but heavy enough for geat and bearing protection. Took many oil changes to get the right results. Sorry don't have the ratio any more, running a slush box now. Are you sure the shifter fork pads are in good condition as they will make poor up and down shifts as well the synchro clearances within spec, better to be below minimum spec for clean synchro action.

You must remember that that transmission has an unsynchronized 1st gear. Most people dont even use it unless they are towing or pulling stumps. I think going over 5 mph with 3.89 gears and 33" tires on my 78 was a stretch.
Boss,
with over 32 years and 840K miles, many rebuilds I must know they are synchro free in 1st. Get this, synchro reverse in the ZF boxed Rover with hollow shafts, oil pump with all shafts run taper bearings.
