Transmission Questions

I own a 1997 F-350 crew-cab Powerstroke. What transmission does my truck have E40D or 4R100? Is their any difference between the two? I am soon going to change my transmission fluid. I already read the tech article on it. Should I change the transmission filter at the same time? Also shoudl I drain the torque converter or not, some say to do so and some people say its not neccesary. At the same time I am thinking about adding the Tricumulator springs and Sonnax Valve to the transmission. Does this really improve the transmission? Is it worth doing? How hard is it to install, anyone have good directions? I do not know very much about transmissions but other than that I have decent mechanical skills. Finally where is the best place to buy the Sonnax Valve and the Tricumulator springs? Thanks.

DON'T KNOW FOR SURE WHAT TRANNY YOU HAVE
YES YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR FILTER .
I DID NOT DRAIN MY TORQUE CONVERTER (STILL DRAINED 8+ QUARTS)
SONNAX VALVE/TRICUCULATOR SPRINGS FROM "BLACK CLOUD DIESAL"
INSTALATION VERY EASY (DIRECTIONS OBTAINED FROM BCD OR OTHERS)
YOU WILL NOT REGRET THE SONNAX KIT....IT IS EXCELLANT....

yes the filter, and if you can drain the TQ then drain it. i installed a plug in my pan,gauges,tru-cool and external filter set up. sonnax from BCD is like 35-$50. i do not have it but have read it is not that hard to install and is well worth the cash.
i have a banks transcommand and well worth it. but not sure if it is better than sonnax or not.

You have an E4OD. The first year for the 4R100 in the F series was 1999.

If you follow the procedure in the Tech Articles you will change the fluid in the torque converter. There is no need to drain it separately.

I change my filter every other fluid change. It probably doesn't need to be changed that often, but it isn't that hard or expensive.

My own 2cents worth is change it all. The filter I would get from fleet filters, about half the cost of everyone else. While your ordering the Tranny filter go ahead and order fuel and Kwick air filter. The shipping isn't that much higher. As for torque converter YES why change 1/2 the fluid. If you don't drain that you'll just be mixing clean and dirty fluid. I think you'll need 15 qts of ATF. Also while you have the pan off put in a drain plug, it will make the job alot easier next time. Good luck.

Just where would I find the Tech artical? I have always drained the TC seperatly or on GM stuff put in bypass hose and put fluid in until came clear. They don't have plugs like Ford and Dodge.

Thanks Casey, pretty much the same way I have always done GM stuff. Only I do it up by the radiator so you can see the fluid coming out while you are dumping in. But same thing only different.
Have a great day.

Well I went ahead and did it yesterday. I added the Sonnax valve and the springs. Definetly makes a difference in shifting. It's great, no more mushy shifts. It was well worth the money.
