Well I got the IP timed and the TPS set. I have read on here about replaceing a relay or something on the drive side innner fender that controls the shifting for towing. I have found this controller and conection, just wondering how would I know if I had the tow controller all ready installed. If not where can I get a repalcement to firm up the shifts.
Also what causes the clicking after the wait to start light goes out? Mine use to do it all the time but no only off and on after the light goes out. A freind told me its a relay on the firewall and not the GP controller. I have noticed that when there is no clicking I will not beable to get it started when its hot. This was a problem before I replaced the IP too. But then it was not that bad.
Thanks All
Bob
Banks sells an aftermarket shift controller that you can easily wire into your existing wireing harness and I know there are others. I would guess that it is the gp relay clicking, the older trucks 6.9 had them on the fender the 7.3 are on the intake. As for hard starting hot you may have other problems. I have an 84 and a 91 and both will start hot without gp cycling, even after a couple hours on a warm day. My 84 controller is shot so I just use a mometary on switch and then only for five to ten seconds cold and it will start right off down to about 50 degrees. I would check the fuel pump pressure hot at the schreader valve, sounds like its not getting enough fuel when hot, it should start much easier (quicker) when hot than when cold, I'm assuming the batteries are fresh and starter is strong. good luck
The controller only heats the GPs with a cold engine normally. The clicking is the controller cycling up to 2 minutes depending on temps (very cold -20F much longer) to clear any smoke.
I second the fuel pump.......since you changed the IP already.
Do pressure and flow test on the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.
If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.
