Hi guys,
I am going to order a Magnaflow turbo-back system on Wednesday. Keeping in mind that this truck a daily driver and it tows my 5er, I would like to keep it "relatively quiet". How much louder is a 5" system vs. a 4" system? Also, do you get that booming, droning sound in the cab (with the windows up), specially at constant highway RPM?
Thank You.
With the windows up - I doubt that you'd get any droning with either system - but the 5" system will probably give you a deeper sound - so a better chance of droning. Like Strokin_it7.3 said - 5 inch is really overkill, I'd stick with 4 inch.
Go With The 4 Inch.... I've Heard That 5 Inch Does Not Add Any Additional Benefit. Also Clearance For The Down Pipe Is Almost Too Tight For 5 Inch.
I Use The 4 Inch......very Pleased With Results And Sound And Lower E G T.
my neighbor and i installed a 4" DP on his 04 6.0L was good, then he installed 4" pipe to 2- 5" stacks. he said he lost some low end power and it drones.
said he was gonna add a resonator.
the thing just whistles @ low end. but BARKS real loud when he gets on it.

just wondering... what did you use.. what did it cost... how was the install..?

I THINK THE BRAND NAME WAS "DIAMOND EYE" OR "DIAMOND EDGE"
SOME THING LIKE THAT. THEY ARE ALUMINUM.
BOUGHT THE KIT FROM A LOCAL DIESAL PERFORMANCE SHOP FOR 399.00
SORRY I CAN'T REMEMBER THE EXACT NAME.
THE INSTALL WAS NOT BAD. TAKE LOOSE FROM TURBO---CUT OUT REST OF EXISTING PIPE , MUFFLER , TAIL PIPE ....IN SECTIONS.
START INSTALLING NEW PIPE BEGINNING WITH TURBO DOWN PIPE AND WORKING YOUR WAY BACK. LEAVE LOOSE UNTILL ALL SECTIONS ARE FITTED TOGETHER AND HANGING. ADJUST AN TIGHTEN.
ALSO IT IS NECESSARY TO REMOVE PASSENGER SIDE INTERCOOLER TUBE FOR EASIER ACCESS TO TURBO DOWN PIPE CLAMP.
Thank You all for the responses. Since this is going to be a turbo-back system, what do you guys think about changing the turbine wheel also? Is it a good mod and does it make a difference in real world performance? Also will the exhaust and/or the the turbine wheel affect mileage in any way?
Speaking of mileage, I tried Diesel Kleen. It gave a little better mileage but not much. Over 4 consecutive tankfulls, 2 with and 2 without, i averaged a .75 mpg. increase:
16.54 mpg. with to 15.79 mpg. without. This was all short trips, around town, mostly with the A/C on. Pretty decent for a 4WD 7,480# truck. Any thoughts?
Thanks again.
Okay, I'll let you know what I think of my system. It is a 5" Diamond Eye. It has a 4" downpipe - I don't believe you can get a 5" downpipe to fit unless you lift the body.
The 4" pipe continues just past the trans xmember, then opens up to 5" with a single, 5" straight through muffler. The exhaust isn't aluminum - it is aluminized steel.
I have tried to make it drone - and it will a little - but only if the throttle and load are just right. Otherwise, it is very quiet - on the inside. WIth the windows up it hardly sounds different than stock - a bit deeper, barely, more turbo whistle, and some drone ONLY if load and throttle are just right.
With the windows down, it has a very airy sound backed up by the turbo whistle. It gets louder with full throttle, but it still isn't as loud as my Toyota 4-banger was (header, 2 1/4" exhaust with high flow, reverse flow muffler).
Why did I get the 5"? Just for the extravagance. No need for it. Unless you really want to see that sewer pipe sized exhaust pipe sticking out from behind the wheel, save $100 bucks and get the 4".
Me? I like my 5", just as some people like their stacks. Opinion, not function.
Oh, yeah. Loss of low end power. That is a function NOT of the 5" exhaust, but the 4" downpipe - and I don't believe you really lose 'low end power', rather you lose a little response right off idle. Above 900rpm, it feels fabulous.
If you want to keep the best off-idle response, go with a 3.5" downpipe - but then your EGT will be a little higher. It is all a compromise - what compromise works best for you?
