Windows 2000 Professional Help!!

I built this computer about a month ago. I had XP on it, but once again, my computer was hacked into. So, I decided to install W2K Pro. The problem I am having is with my CDRW/DVD drive. Windows only recognizes it as a DVD/CD drive. I had this problem once before with 2000 Server. I tried to go to the drive manufacturers website to download a driver, but the only thing they have is firmware updates. Do any of you guys know any tricks to get Windows to recognize that this is a CDRW drive? I can't burn any CDs!!!!

WIndows 2k doesn't have it's own burning software like XP does. So you will need to install either Roxio or Nero. Depending on the model/make of the drive there may or may not be specific drivers for it. You may need to update the firmware.....

It is possible that w2k does not recognise it, (as in they are incompatible)

That's almost impossible as XP and 2k drivers are the same. So it would just be a matter of installing the correct driver.

I have Nero installed. I haven't tried to burn one yet, but when I put a blank CD in, it tells me the drive is not accessible. It is a brand new drive. It is a Aopen 52x/16x Internal drive. I tried to find in on the HCL on Microsoft's website. It had several Aopen drives listed, but none of them matched mine exactly. pfogle, with XP the drive worked fine. Are you saying the drivers in 2000 are exactly the same as XP?

The drivers for reading CD/DVD are the same. 2000 has no burning drivers/software. The Nero you are usin, is it a bought version or a version that came with this drive or another drive? If with another drive, it will only work with that other drive. If a bought version of Nero, make sure you have all the updates for that version.

This version of Nero came with this drive when I bought it. I used it in XP and it worked fine. I never thought about going to Nero's site to see if I have the latest version. I will try that next. I went back to 2KPro because I have had nothing but trouble with XP. I was always getting hacked into even though I had firewalls, antivirus software, and spyware programs all installed on the computer. I had 2KPro for awhile before that and didn't get hacked once. There are still alot of holes in XP.

Since this is the software that came with the drive, I would try Aopen's site first. They may have something there for Win 2000.

FWIW: If you installed Real Player the drivers will nuke the OEM driver software and prevent it from recognizing the drive or from using the drop and click software that came with the drive. You can only then burn complete CDs. The "solution" is to buy their $90 "upgrade" package!

Hey guys, I appreciate all of your ideas and suggestions. I tried driversguide before I started this thread and the only thing that was available was Nero Express, which is what I have. I went to Nero's site and downloaded the lastest version, and everything was fine??????? Don't know why, but the version I had that came with the drive (Version 5.0) wouldn't work with 2000. Man, computers are going to be the end of me!!!!!! Thanks again guys!!
