You guys have helped me fix a lot of problems,I know you can help me with this one.I have a 92 7.3 idi. When I start it up it will idle fine, but when i rev it up a little by tapping the throttle it will sometimes die.If I let it down slowly it does O.K.Is this normal for a diesel or is there something I can adjust or add to the fuel to fix this.
With just what you discribed I would guess that you have a small air leak that is letting the fuel bleed back toward the tank a little. But more info needs to be posted, does it do it only when cold? how long does it have to sit before it happens? have you replaced anything yet? hows it run after its warmed up? post this info and you should get the replies to narrow it down. good luck
What is the fast idle set at for cold start, what is the curb idle set at see your valve cover for info. There is a TSB re stalling at lights/stops when clutch pushed in... I do read yours as an E40D but this is related to rust/crud in the IP. This is applicable to all 83-94 F and E series diesel vehicles the Ford number is:
TSB Article 94-5-11
Stalls-6.9-7.3 diesel when coming to a stop or clutch disengaged.
Publication date March 9, 94
I'm not sure what the idle settings are since my tach doesn't work til I get around 1000 rpm.I would guess 800 cold and 500 warm. The truck ins't driveable yet so I don't know what it will do.I start it every wknd to let it run awhile. It usually does after the cold start kicks off.I'll rev it up to 2500 or so and let off.I will check the return lines to see what kind of shape they are in.Thanks,Ron
The tach should be working from startup, try removing and testing........
The dead tach should send the automatic trans into a "failure management mode" (limp mode) with harsh engagements and firm shift feel, and an abnormal shift schedule.
Replace the tach sender on the oil fill housing a big 1" nut with 2 wires. Ford only part Engine RPM sensor E5TZ-17B384-A about $50. You can remove and clean it but usually changed later too. You can test it too, hold it in the air away from ferrous metal, using an ohm meter lead on each wire you need DC resistance between 2000-3000 ohms.
