Question about thermocouples

I am also in the guage market. (Boost and Pyro) There's lot's of choices for thermocouples. I'm thinking that I would like to get one of the high temp versions, but find that there is a long, a short, and an adjustable one. Seems like adjustable is the easiest, and would like to know of any pros and cons on fixed vs. adjustable.
Also what length lead wire is sufficiant to reach the A-pillar from a pre-turbo thermocouple mount? 6,8,or 10 feet?
Thanks all for your time.

My autometer also came with the 8' lead, and there is probably 2' coiled up under the dash. I'd like to nto have that much extra, but that's a lot better situation than being a little short.

The thermocouple probe length is important. You want to select a probe that will give suficient immersion depth while still minimizing the effect of heat conduction. Generally, anywhere in the middle 2/3 of the pipe is considered acceptable. Dead center is optimum.

Like everyone else I selected an 8' lead, but the 6' would have left a cleaner looking installation.....at the risk of being a tiny bit too short.

Not sure what you meant by a high temp version. All automotive applications that I have seen use a type K thermocouple. It's useful application range is 200-2300F. The probe housing will be either inconel or stainless steel, both of which have melting points above 2500F. Durability should never be an issue regardless of which probe you choose.

8' it is.
I was shopping on Isspro's web site and they offer three different thermocouples, a long, a short, one with an adjustable depth. I guess I'll go for the adjustable one so I can be sure that it's dead center.
kwik no gauges yet?
Guages hadn't happened yet due to financial obligations happening at the time. Truck is now paid off and it's time to play!

Oh-oh! Look out! Wish I were a "goodies vendor" in Washington State right now! I could become RICH! ;-)))

Now, we all get to see what happens when the focus shifts from reliability to performance in the hands of a professional mechanic.

Quik, I just got gauges (Autometers) myself and I really had great luck with Black Cloud Diesel. I told them that I found them on this forum and they took good care of me. I next have a NAPA (Kwik) filter on the way to replace my K&N. I too will be watching your next move to see how the Pro's do it.

I'm not going all out like Dockboy and others.
My total plans for this truck are guages, (first) then a 4" downpipe exhaust flaring as soon as possible to 5" and coming up through the right cargo box as a 5" stack. Haven't decided on whether to get a clanker for it or a turn out tip.
A boost fooler valve.
Finally a Diablo Predator tuner.
If the turbo doesn't make it then I'll get a BB. But only if this one gives up. It works great right now.
No more than that. I want this truck to last for a very long time.

I HAVE ISSPRO GAUGES (TRANNY-PYRO-BOOST)
THERMOCOUPLE WITH ATTACHED LEAD WILL NEED TO BE 6 FEET IF READING AT PRE TURBO. MINE CONNECTS TO A SMALL AMP BOX THAT I MOUNTED JUST IN SIDE CAB UP ON FIREWALL. JUST AS TRANNY TEMP DOES.
FROM THERE.. THE AMP BOXES, THER IS ENOUGH WIRING TO GET UP TO THE A-PILLAR AREA.
OH....THERMOCOUPLE IS SOLD SEPARATELY FROM GAUGES (IN MY CASE).

IF YOU ARE GOING POST TURBO, THEN 8 FEET THERMO LEAD IS BETTER AS THE SIX FOOT LENGTH IS BARELY, BARELY ENOUGH.(THIS WAY ON MY 00 MODEL)

Do all Isspro guages have the amp boxes? I hope not. I like the color banding that they put on the pyros and nobody else offers that look.

DO NOT KNOW IF "ALL" ISSPRO HAVE AMP BOXES.
BOTH SETS I HAVE BEEN THROUGH DID (PRYRO AND TRANNY TEMPS ONLY)
I ALSO LIKED THE COLOR BANDING ON THE PYRO.
FURTHERMORE, THE ISSPRO GAUGES CAN BE ORDERED IN THE BACK GROUND COLOR-NUMBER COLOR-POINTER COLOR THAT YOU NEED TO MATCH YOUR STOCK GUAGE COLORS. ALSO YOU CAN GET THESE LITTLE BULB COVERS TO MAKE THE LIGHT SHINE THRU LITE GREEN LIKE YOU DASH LIGHTS DO.
MINE ARE THE "ISSPRO EVA" TYPE

That stack is gonna look good let me be the first to welcome you to the small, but proud group of the Stacked. sounds like you got a good plan for your rig. one question, why just a tuner? you want to be able to read codes? i figured you'd go for a good burned chip....
