Hub locking

I have a silly question...if you lock your hubs and just use the 4WD lever to go in and out of 4WD what is going on in there and what are the consequences?

I ask because in DEC JAN FEB I have about 1/4 mile of road to 4WD over before I hit the plowed road and its a pain locking and unlocking every day !!

I have a 1979 Ford F250 4WD, is there any chance of a remote lockable hub?

Thanks

Hub locking

One of the four wheel rags once recommended occasionally locking the hubs and driving in two wheel drive to keep the front axel properly lubed. I do this on occassion on a thirty mile commute to work and have had no problems. As long as you don't have a locker in the front diff the only problem I see is increased drag on the drivetrain. Opinions to the contrary welcomed.

It wont do nothing because when you put the lever in four wheel drive you diengage the power to the front driveshaft. The only things moving is the front diff assembly. The only disadvantage is you wont get as good fuel economy. Good luck!

Hub locking

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Oct-02 AT 09:05 PM (EST)]I usually lock my hubs in in mid Nov. and leave them in till april. As long as the front axel is turning the same speed (rear wheels not spinning), you should have no problem shifting from 2 to 4 wheel drive. I may be wrong here, but it is my belief that there is little if any more wear on the front drive train with the hubs locked in. I think the only draw back is a bit less gas milage.
