When im driving my truck, i feel a pretty good vibration. If im going slow, its worse, for example if im in 2nd gear and doing like 20mph, the whole truck will shake pretty good. I just had my ujoint changed think that could have something to do with it, but i still feel the vibration. What are some things i can check out? Could it possibly be coming from flat spots in the tires? Would it vibrate that much just from that?
Yes its a Ford Truck. Its a 56 F100. I didnt put it in the F100 section cause its pretty much only a F100 body. The front half of the chassis is a Grand Torino and the rear half is from the truck itself. It has a 351C in it also. Wasnt really sure where to post this question since i wasnt really asking about a F100, just asking a general auto question.
Does it feel like there may be a wobble to it? you may have a seperated belt, or it may be the infamous out of phase problem with the drive shaft which requires taking it out and spinning it half a turn and reinstall... never had it happen to me, but it is taught to us in tech school, and sometimes shows up. Being so low in the speed, it may be the tires. How is the alignment? may be worth having checked, as some shops you would think do a good job don't.... a quick way to check that is to run your hands across the tread, rub in across the tread, then pull back across the tread. Does it feel real smooth going one way and kinda like a sharp edge going the other? if so, the toe is off. Toe can cause the tire to skip if off enough.
When i am going slow, i really feel it. Doesnt really kick in until it shifts (auto) into 2nd gear. For example, if im just in drive and i dont step on the gas and let the truck go by itself, when its going to shift into 2nd gear, theres a vibration. Cant really tell if there is a wobble. It all feels the same to me.
If im stopped at a light and i step on the gas to go, ill get a vibration thats pretty strong, it will go away once the truck picks up some speed and shifts into 3rd gear. Once i am up to speed, and step on the gas, i hardly feel a vibration, if one at all.
Like i said, i just had my ujoints changed. Truck sat on tires for 12 years. Was thinking it could be a flat spot in all the tires, but would a decent size flat spot really cause all this vibration?
I havent checked the alignment really, but it seems to drive straight, ill have to get it on a level straight road and see
Sounds to me like you have a tread seperation on a tire/tires. A lot of times you can hear a seperation, almost sounds like the rubber slapping the pavement. It'll be a whole lot worse a slower speeds and can almost disappear at higher speeds... Seperations like to hide on the inside of the tire where it's not so noticable.
