Tuning question

Need some help here.

Iv'e been turning wrenchs all my life and can tear anything down rebuild it and put it back together. I have been an industrial mechanic and engineer for my whole carrier. My problem is I have never been able to do the fine tuning.

I have a 65 F100 with a 352. I have upgraded it to a 1976 dura spark, rebuilt a Holley 650 and headers. The thing runs great and idles smooth.

The problem is that I used to be able to just roll the clutch out and give it the gas and away we went. Now it doesn't seem to have the hors power to do so. As soon as you hit the throttle she takes right off with more power than she had running the old carb and dizzy. It doesn't spit back or dye it just hesitates.

Is this carb problems or dizzy timing problems,(since that is what was changed). Oh also I did remove the resistor wire under the dash as advised by the members here on this sight.

Thanks for any help.

Jon

could be a bunch of things. your timing might be off, your carb could have the bowl float too low or too high, your jets could be too small, and not giving enough gas, or too big and giving too much. the acceleration pump could be giving either too much or too little gas.

it might also be the headers. Adding headers makes more power and torque than the old Logs, but it also moves the power higher up on the RPM band. It may be that your combination just isn't making the same power now at 600 rpm.

Ok
I went out and checked the bowl level and it is set fine. (I love that about a Holley, so easy to check and adjust)
Set the idle again using the vacuum method I learned from here. I got a perfect 20" vacuum.
I bumped up the timming just a touch and wala, what a differance. I can now let the clutch out withou giving her any foot and than give it the gas once ingaged and she takes off. It also got rid of the back rap I was getting before.

Thanks for the input 66beater.

It was running so good I didn't want to come home so I spent about 2 hours just drivin around.

LMAO!!!
The Mrs. takes it personal when I do that. She thinks it's because of her & the kids. OK, maybe sometimes...

If I take the twins she has no problem.

Well it is like 101 today and my old 65 does not have A/C (yet) so nobody wanted to cruse with me. I enjoy the alone time sometimes.

I guess I should have driven to SF insted of staying in this valley. The price of gas looks the same about $2.64 in the valley too.

Beer and Tri-Tip worked pretty well.

Is the carb a double pumper or a vacuum unit? Sounds like a carb problem to me.

jd,
in a couple of weeks the annual trip to Dardanelle with the Norton Club begins, a trip over the pass, Mono Lake, Yosemite, Mariposa and home to the Bay Area. The best 4 days riding if weather holds up. Any snow on top of Sonora pass? Stay cool and drink plenty of fluids, beer will work.

Well I just came back from a week at a cabin above Calavares Big Trees at about 6000 feet and it was warm with no snow. So it should be a nice ride.

Bear it is vacuum secondary, I don't know what fixed it I re-adjusted the carb and advanced the timing just a touch and she is running much better. I guess I just needed a little guidance and time.

jd,
thanks for weather report in you area. If you have blue anti-stick Holley gaskets it's a easy quick carb passage clean job with Berrymann's spray carb cleaner. Pull bowls, jet blocks (keep carb body on motor) and spray all passages plus the four air bleeds up top on primary and secondary sides. Air blast and assemble, many times this will make a sluggish running motor run chrisp again. Yes you stated rebuilt. Clean and lubed mechanical advance as well vacuum and try around 8 to 12 degrees inital advance. At what rpm does mechanical start and vacuum advance start? I found you will have a "flat spot" if both are late. It's adjust oops wrong way go back tune time.

You need to check the adjustment on the accel pump. With any movement of the throttle you should have fuel squirting from the nozzles. If not that's you stumble.
