Just back from trip, quick question

Hey guys;

I was on a trip towing my TT and when I would go up an incline the tranny would down shift, which is normal, but when it did the RPMs would jump up to around 3000. Then would drop back to around 2500. Then when back on the level it would go back into OD. Is this the TC locking back up, or is there a rev limiter in there?

Thanks

Frank

Sounds about right. Mine does the same thing. The converter clutch releases on initial downshift and the rpm goes up, then TC re-engages and the rpm drops off. You can tell the transmission is slipping until the converter locks up again.

Thanks, didn't think it was anything to worry about.

same here... that's why i like having the boost gauge... i know how far down i can get on the accelerator by how much boost i get... that keeps me in o.d while i build max boost BEFORE i start to climb a hill, (on the highway this is usually about 17-18 lbs and running about 74-76 mph), this way my mule can pull my 5ver over most hills and STAY IN OD...! i checked, and my egts are about 100* LOWER pulling the hill this way as opposed to slowing down a little and letting her downshift... i think this also helps keep tranny temps down... less shifting = lower temps... one other thing... my 02 has the 3.73 gears...

Mine are the same. I found that 9 lbs of boost will get me over most average inclines at about 60. Haven't tried the higher speeds yet, but will on the next trip. I'm still a transplanted gasser that used to pull with the 460. Still trying to learn this diesel world.
