i swapped a 360 for a 460 in my '71 3/4 ton highboy p/u i've been havin trouble boltin trans to bell housin seems the splines on the trans shaft ain't long enough causin the clutch to stay mashed to the flywheel even though the pressure plate is releasin and i checked this to make sure. is there a different clutch i could use? no machine shops around can extend the splines and i don't want to just put a spacer between trans and bell housin cuz i'm not sure how far pilot shaft is in bushin i'd appreciate any help thanks. vern
Having a little trouble following your post, so correct me if I'm wrong.
Your trans wont fully mate up with your bellhousing. If so is the input shaft bottoming out on the back of the crank? I've run across this a few times on Chrysler products where they did not machine the back of the crank to full depth if there was to be an automatic trans used, because the no need for the pilot bushing. This was done to save time and cost. I've heard of Fords that were like this but have yet to see one. Check the depth and compare with your old engine. Also check the depth of your bellhousing.
the 360 bell is about 1" deeper than the 460's the clutch disc won't slide all the way to the throwout bearin shaft i've cleaned the splines up and there's no burrs i'm thinking that i could a 1/2" to 5/8" spacer between tranny and bell as long as the pilot shaft sets back in the bushin far enough. whats your thoughts on this
I 've seen spacers between the trans and bellhousing before, it seemed to work out fine. Like you said as long as the pilot bushing has a good purchase on the shaft. And as long as the throwout bearing does not travel to far forward and come off the collar.
What is the depth of your 460 bellhousing I 'll check it agianst one of mine and see if there is a chance you've got the wrong bell for your app. .
i took the input shaft out of a '79 3/4 ton that i had here cut about 1/8" off pilot shaft and it worked like a charm i just didn't have enough splines on the '71 input shaft since the '79 had a 351m which uses pretty much the same bell housin i thought that shaft might work in my '71 tranny and it did. thanks for your input. vern
