i looking into getting a new camshaft and was wondering whats the biggest lift and duration i can get into a 1991 5.0 without smashing the valves into the pistons any help would be great
Piston-to-valve clearnce isn't really the problem. You need to get a cam that is Speed Density-friendly. (Unless you've converted to Mass Air.) There are a few choices, and if you look around you'll several other threads on this subject. There's quite a bit of info on that subject in this thread:
You need to look at cams that are really designed for a truck engine, and the RPM range that truck operates at. A cam that's made for a car and designed to give you your Tq. and HP in the upper part of the RPM range isn't really going to be satisfactory in a heavy truck that needs its Tq. to come in at a lower RPM.
