Unhappy engine won't crank over when hot

I have a really weird problem with my 98 NASCAR edition F150 with the 4.6 V8. When I've been driving the truck around town for a couple of hours and then let it sit for about 15 minutes or more, the starter doesn't work. When I turn on the ignition, I get the normal dashboard idiot lights, but when I attempt to start the truck I get nothing. There is no click of the starter or solenoid, no nothing. If I let the truck sit for a couple of hours it starts right up! I've replaced the starter/solenoid thinking that it was a bad solenoid, but that didn't fix the problem. Anybody have any idea what could be causing this problem?

Try getting a heat shield for the starter. Even if new, heat can cause problems. Especially if your exhaust goes near it.

Your battery may also be getting tired. Check for corrosion on the terminals.

I would replace the starter, and put a heat shield on it when you put it on. When the starter winding is warm, and is back, or has a short in it, for some reason it will start to show problems. I once knew why, but for the life of me, right now, I just can't think of why. Anyways, as it gets warm it will show the problem, and since that is the only time it shows, if you have it tested it will show good, because it will not be warm. So, if it were my truck, I would replace the starter with a heat shield.

try something ford is known for make a new wire from the solinode to the starter solinode out of 10 gauge for the smallest dia. of the 2. they make a corrosion inside the wire and drop the voltage going down to the starter also change the shorter of the 2 battery cables . the one from the battery to the solonoide. i use marine grade wires which are fully tinned wires on the inside and it helps a lot.

When you turn on the motor, does the gauge needles sweep right
then back? If so, your battery is bad. Mine wouldn't start when hot.
