AT540 Leaking

I have a '79 F800 with an Allison Automatics AT540 (370ci 4V engine), and it's leaking to the point of almost a stream coming out. It happened yesterday when we were lifting a machining lathe with the truck (6000lbs). It stared leaking all of a sudden, and a puddle formed under the truck in no time. It's coming out of the bellhousing, and I have been told that I should just keep working with it (we are supposed to lift the lathe again and lower it down into a basement access ramp of one of the buildings here on campus), regardless of the leak. I am afraid that the tranny is going to go on me while this lathe is in the air, which means the PTO will go, lose the hydraulic pump, and then lose hydraulic pressure, which means the lathe comes to the ground fast. There's 2 real questions in this post if you haven't gotten that already - 1) What would be causing that leak (if it is possible to tell without tearing the tranny apart, or just suggestions of common things that would cause a leak there), and 2) Is it safe to keep working with the transmission in this shape? Thanks in advance

I use the term "leaking" loosely - I just added 3 quarts and it's still not even coming up on the dipstick (and yes, I was checking it at a warm idle).

So I added a total of 7 quarts to bring it up to the full line. Now it's not leaking at all, even after dropping the lathe into it's spot. Anyone know what might be going on and why it leaked before and not now? Could it have leaked because it was low, and now that it's full it's not leaking?
