I just picked up a 5.8 today to put in my 93 f150. I think I've read every post on here about making the swap from my tired 302. I'd like to do a few mods to the 351 before I put it in. I seen it mentioned several times about cams, heads, and headers. But could someone be more specific about which cam and heads I can go with, without having to change the 351 computer? Also, what kind of h.p. figures could I expect after making the changes?
well for a cam 35-255-5 is a speed density friendly cam an will give good gains.
headers you can run what ever your wallet can afford. Edelbrock, trickflow,AFR are all great and will give nice gains. you might also look into an edelbrock truck intake and 56mm bbk throttlebody to top things off. headers and a complete exhaust system would round things off and give you good power . what year 5.8 did you get?
the motor is out of a 1990 f250. high mileage...so im planning on doing a rebuild. thanks for the advice...should i look for this stuff at jegs? the headers will have to wait a little while....wife budgets me closely..HA! what about a performance chip? and if i need to bore the motor, can i still use the stock computer. id hate to do all my mods and then find out my computer cant handle it. i have no idea what i would do then.
a performance chip will just cost money and not really be benificial at this time. yes you can bore the motor but no more then a .30. more then that might cause the computer to act up.
thank you very much for your help. hopefully i wont need to bore the block anyway. plus ill save some money not buying a chip for it. im not gonna pretend i know anything about cams, is there a certain brand i should look for with the numbers you gave me? is it just a cam or lifters too?
its a CompCam. you will find it at summit with that same set of numbers. it doesnt include the lifters or springs if the ones on your motor are worn. call compcam or email them about what other items you might need
