For starters, I would think you need to figure what type of bed you need. You have a flat bed and a short bed, two totally different looks and function. Will this be a work truck or something to tool around town in?

I love short beds - but a short 4X4 rides rougher than a corn cob. Time you get springs enough to hold the 4 wd down it bounces like you will not beleve. In addition, the short wheelbase gets real choppy at speed, and unstable. I would think long and hard before I built a short 4X4.

I would build the shorty as a light duty runabout, and the flatbed dually as a stout 4X4 workhorse. Use the shorty like a car, and the dually as a heavy truck when you need one.

I bet you wind up driving 10 miles in the shorty for every one mile in the dually.

Can't say I've ever seen a flatbed go 4-wheelin'.....but I would think that being a mechanic, a flatbed might come in handy for haulin' engines and body parts. But if you want a truck to play with, it sounds as though the shortbed will win out... Fox

I'd have to agree w/ W.B. about everything he's stated.
A 4x4 Shorty @ speed & 4 wheelin' is so unstable you'd have to keep a change of shorts in your truck.
