I know, I know there has been much talk about getting a new y-pipe made.
I have a buddy who has a Mustang specialty shop here in Chandler AZ (Keith @ AZ Dyno Chip) and he is going to build me one for about $300. Any suggestions on pipe diameter or the bends? He has never done a V10 b4. What path should he take etc etc...I know my stock system is 3". Should I go bigger. He is going to plumb it from the headers to the tail pipe. He is going to do it next thurs. \
Please Help..
Thanks
I agree, if all he is going to do is make a new y-pipe, 300 bones is way to much. I got a new y-pipe and some other custom work done all the way back to the 6" stainless tip and it only cost me $125. Here are some pics of what I came up with. The y-collector is made by Flowmaster (2.5" in/3" out), turned out quite well. Got the idea from skipperw.
Let me clarify the pipe he is building for me. This pipe is completey new with new flanges custom made as well as a custom made free flowing y collector. He is going to do 3" from the headers to 3 1/2" all the way back. He is going to put a new muffler with a 3 1/2 opening and exit.
I am keeping a single exhaust system on mine, he says the less pipe, and the less bends, the better. I will post pics as soon as he is done. He is going to use his best judgement as a performance specialist, and do what he can to make it right.

unless he has a mandrel bender, you'll need to start w/3" pipes to end up with 2 1/2". Good luck with your new system, it looks like it's gonna be cool, Ken
It is going to be all mandrel bent, not crush bent.
crush bending much cheaper, but the airflow is somewhat constricted.
I am also going to do the Zoodad mod on my intake this weekend.

The "Y" pipe is just a name given to the exhaust pipe intersection...that's all.
Save about 200 bucks and tell him, "Forget the "Y" pipe junk. All I want is for the driver's side pipe to meet the passenger's side pipe on the passenger side---like the old engines had - yeah, that's right -- like the old way, man. Dig?"

See what he says...
The old way didn't have to meet the other side, we just dropped one pipe off each manifold, or the $69.95 headers, went right back to 2 cherry bombs that we had already heated up to bright red with the acetylene torch and poured cold water in to 'clean em out' so to speak and then two turn outs either in front of the rear wheels, or just turned down in front of the pumpkin. THAT was the old way huh Ron ?

I was just telling my nephew the other day about sticking the water hose in a hot tailpipe <no jokes, please> and "burning out" the cherry bombs. And sometimes the tailpipes were really sidepipes.
Man - the good ol' days, when gas was 25 cents a gallon and an engine lasted about 60K... (could've had something to do with midnight races down at the skinny-dipping hole...reckon?)
Cherry-bombs, gee, you must be a bunch of old-timers
In my youth, I used "Thrush mufflers" which were good enough to explain to the cop that "yeah, I have mufflers on this thing" ...
My FE390 in my '74 highboy, I had true-duals, with TWO thrush mufflers on each pipe, for a total of four. And it was still louder than heck...
Imagine, headers, to dual pipes, to two Thrush mufflers aft of the transfer case, then two tail-pipes going up and over the rear, and two more Thrush's nestled up under the bed just in front of the rear bumper, and 2 ft's tailpipe going straight out the back under the bumper.
it would definitely asfixiate the motorcyclist behind me

I'm probably going to date myself now, but the COOL set-up was headers, to bolt onto the header flange Purple Hornies which had their own turnouts on the ends. You could turn them straight down, so the sound bounced off the pavement and into the car, or sideways to exit under the side. Now you all know I was around in the late 60's and early 70's in the So Cal car scene.
