My 77 F150 needs a new oil pan. I have a factory 460 2wd and am unsure if the current pan on it is the original. It has a rear sump pan with the drain plug on the back of it. What I've been told by several people is that this pan only came on the 4wd trucks. I don't know if someone maybe couldn't find an original replacement or if this is in fact the one that came with the truck. The engine was rebuilt not long before I purchased the truck and the current pan's drain plug has been tapped out so much that it now has a npt plug in it and I can't find a large enough oversive to work. If possible I would like to change to a front sump pan since they are considerably cheaper. I plan on replacing the pump and screen at the same time so the type of pickup I use will be determined on whether I can use a different pan. Any help would be appreciated.
I believe your right on the 2wd having a front sump pan but you are possibly in the best position to determine if a front sump will work on your truck. Crawl under it, and look at it if the front sump would be directly over the axle or would have a cross member interfere with it then no it won't work but if nothing is going to hit a front sump then you can change it
The 2 wheel drive pans were a little deeper than the car pans, probably held an extra quart of oil. The front sump car pans are cheap and easy to get. It would also fit a little better.
If your in MD then I know somebody selling his rear sump pan from his 514 (basically a 460) that went into an AC Cobra replica. Its a rear sump pan and oil pickup. He had a Moroso 9qt pan and replacement pickup installed on it because it held more oil then the stock 7qt unit but it was also 2in shallower (T'd out at the bottom to hold more oil) which gave him more ground clearance. Drop me a PM if you want his contact info. Its brand new and was only filled with shipping oil as it was shipped directly from Ford Motorsports.
