I am in the process currently of checking out the brakes on my 56 F100. They actually look suprisingly good, other than the Master cylinder, which looks like its seen better days.
My only problem is that I am not exactly sure what it is. It looks like someone has installed an aftermarket kit in the past to relocate the cylinder on the firewall.
I have taken it off and had a good look over it. The only identifying marks I can find on it are what looks like an 8 on its side in a box followed by the number 18 and another long number 3461189 both on the underside.
I have carried out the usual internet searches but cant find anything that matches.
I have a couple of pics in my gallery that show it. hopefully one will be here:
I looks like an early GM master cylinder with the single clasp. Thats the clip that holds the lid down. The new GM have dual clips. From what I see in the picture, it looks very similar to the late 70's style GM truck master cylinder. If you take the lid off, both reservoirs are the same size, meaning you use this for either drum or disc brakes. I'd pull it off since it needs rebuilding anyways and take it to the auto parts, They can match it and tell you what it is. Let us know what you find. I'm curious.
Cheers imlowr2,
I have taken it off, and yes you are right both front and rear resevoirs are the same size. (The truck still has drums all round.)
Unfortunately I dont have a parts shop anywhere near me that would be able to help. vintage and classic US parts tend only to be supplied by a few specialists here in the UK.
There is one up near my mums house about 90 miles away so if I really get stuck, I will take it with me next time I pop up to see her.
I looks like a good master cylinder, it may only need a rebuild. The studs that the master cylinder mounts to will also fit other GM master cylinders, along with Buick, Pontiac, etc. I'm running a GM master cylinder on my truck with disc front brakes. Good luck! And Cheers to you too. imlowr2
