Arrow Turn signal problem

1970 F-250 4x4

Now here's one I'm sure none of the rest of you have seen:

Intermittent turn signals!

Not the flashing kind but the kind that sometimes work, sometimes don't. I pretty sure it is in the "ring" in the column because the lever won't "click" into place. Also, any time I am on anything rough, (which with this old farm beast is most of the time), the left turn signal is usually on. Doesn't bother me any but usually prompts fits of laughter from my wife teasing me about being old...

How difficult is it to replace the ring and where do you get them? I'm sure the wheel has to come off but what then?

Thanks!

The wheel has to come off, you will probably need a puller. The signal switch is under it. It is available from most suppliers, DC, LMC, maybe even NAPA. No problem to replace taking the connector off is the only difficult part. Good luck

My '67 was worn like that.......and if you even waved your arm past the stalk....it would turn on. To turn them off, you had to kinda feel for the middle and see if they were still blinking...LOL!!

To replace.........you need to pull the steering wheel(not a big deal if you have a puller). Get to bottom of column and find the two bundles of wires coming out of hole in top of column. Should be like 2 and 6 wires?, attached to two plugs. Make a diagram of plug/wire arrangement for easy re-assembly. It takes a small screwdriver to pop the clips to get wires to come out of plug. They also make the gizmo that does this(check Azone?). With wheel off, unscrew turn signal arm, and unscrew switch and then pull wires up through. Fishing the new wires down isn't real bad, but might take a few tries. Do a couple at a time, they do fit.

Once wires are back down thru column, attach pins to proper spot on plugs and put everything back together.

Can be done within an hour with basic hand tools.

Good luck!

Got mine from LMC, just so you know they have changed the color code on the new wires so be sure to tell them to send you the install directions. If you cut the wires at the top of the colum you can stagger tape to an old wire and use this to pull the wires thru the post all the wires if taped together are to fat to go thru the hole. Also check the turn signal lever post threads after I did mine had to pull off to rethread; some fool tapped it with a 10 mm thread instead of 1/4 fine thread.

LOL!! Ya, about the threads.......I got mine all back together and found the arm would NOT thread in!!!
Digging thru my tap selection I couldn't find the tap, so I had to pull it all apart, install old switch and take new one to work next the day and re-tap threads . Then, the next night tear into it again and re-install new one. Geez...............

I got mine from LMC also. Mine came with diagram stating which wires were different colors now. A little trick, but I drew a wiring diargam so when I put it back together I didn't get corn-fuzed

Thanks for the tips! I've got a wheel puller so that shouldn't be a problem. I'll get the piece ordered and see to it!

Thanks again!

Not to steal thread but is there a clip and where that holds the turn signal blinker? This on a 68CS, the blinker is dangling and I can't hear it. Don't want to be that "old fart driving with blinker on". The 69 Flairside blinker was alot louder and mounted some where in the dash.

Are you talking about the RELAY?? Yes, there is a clip, but not sure if BOTH relays have one. I know there is at least ONE clip behind gauge cluster for a relay. Can't say for sure if there is one for both relays. (one relay for turn, one for hazards).

You can buy "LOUD" blinker relays...just for that application. Most of the newer electronic models don't make a sound.

Freightrain,
it's the relay (blinker) for turn. With the exhaust system i'm running i can't hear it as well with sun on the dash can't see the blinking arrow. Don't want to be one of those people who drive with their blinker on left, cancel then turn right. I can be an idiot without extra help at times. Looked under the dash and can't see any mounting clip or bracket. Pick N Pull time to locate a bracket, thanks.

It's usually right on the support for steering column, there about. Simple horseshoe spring clip. Shouldn't be hard to come by one.

Stop by a bike shop and get one of those "BEEPING" gizmos they have on motorcycles. I've heard them before while sitting at a light.

Thanks Freightrain, on my other truck (69 Flairside) the blinker was mounted some place solid and made more noise, want the same on the 68 CS. Will have to do some investigating.
