Took a 94 F250 for a 10 mile test drive today and when I got back checked the oil levels both engine and trans. Engine was fine - trans was about 2 inches higher than full - repeated this check 4 or 5 more times - same results. I'm considering buying the truck but a little worried about this high level - the oil was nice and red and didn't smell burnt just too high on the stick. Anybody have any experience with this? It was about 85 today and I drove about 65 mph. Checked the oil idling in park. I believe the trans is the E4OD. It drove well with positiive shifts.
someone probally just serviced the trans and over-filled it. the level needs to be lowered asap. atf expands as the temp rises and when the fluid level reached the rotating components, it it will start whipping and foaming the fluid. this will cause slipping and poor lubrication and eventually...trans failure ! i have one concern when i see this situation on a used vehicle someone is buying, freshly serviced, what are they trying to hide ?? people don't spend money on vehicles they are getting rid of !! i can tell a lot about a used vehicle, before it's cleaned up and serviced. you need to inquire about where it was serviced, was it service there regulary ? look at the trans oil pan to see if it was removed to replace the filter...if not, have it pulled to disect the filter for tell-tell signs of on-coming failure. my advice...check it out very good before writing the check !
