i took a spark plug wire off used a screwdriver and went to ground when key was turned over no spark.. then i took wire from coil going to distributor off and did same thing. is this the proper way ? so is the coil gone? or is another way to test coil?
I was told 1/4" to 1/2". I'm not sure if you're supposed to start with it close and move it away, or the other way around.
I need to do this test myself on my RX-7, and I too would appreciate some extra details on how to do it without shocking myself or burning up the wires. Anything capable of arcing 1/2" is pretty high voltage.
in most cases, if the spark will jump 1/4 inch, it is considered good,
There are 3 systems to the ignition system,
1, coil, best quick test is to subsitute a known good coil
2. control module, most parts stores will test this for you, you have to remove it and take it to them.
3, stator assy., difficult to test, if all else fails, replace it.
If you have an ohmmeter and a good book, you can do some of the tests yourself.
