does anyone have any good racing stories (winning or losing) with their 300s. i have only been able to beat 4 cylinder cars with less that 100 hp, but i did once beat a 02 c1500 4.8 4x4 extended cab, i think his truck weighs 1500 pounds more than mine, currently i am installing offy intake, headman header, 390 cfm carb, traction bars, 3.55s, and a detroit true trac, my plan is to launch the truck at 2500 in 3rd gear(t18) and see if i can kill my buddies mustang gt to the 60' mark. with the stock intake, exhaust, 3.08 gear and 30.5" tires, a hard launch in third bogs down for a split second then pulls all the way up to 4500 good, so i think i can do it with more power
I dont race my truck, because I dont want to embarass myself. The 4.9 inline six isn't a racing engine, that was probobly the last thing in the designers mind at the time. Infact, I fear racing 4 cylinder mustangs from the 80's, because they will probobly win.
With a few thousand dollars in the motor, then you could race it. I'd guess around $4,000+ to make the 300 a nice drag racing motor.
i have a trans am for going fast, but i hang out with a guy who is just ford crazy, he recently had a 67 mustang built by year one restorations, that is just one of 3 red mustangs he owns, the drag racer is a 66 coupe that does 6.1 in the 1/8 mile he had some friends who did rather well bracket racing with the 300, he sold me an inline 6 header for cheap so then i had to get the intake and it has escalated from there, i am hoping for a mid 10 second run in the 1/8 and yes i know that they are not for racing but the challenge is what makes it fun
a mustang and a truck with an inline six are very different monstors.. especially if your inline is stock. these motors are workhorses.. not racing motors. however they can be built to suit that application
I race mine, lol. Ive got the mazda 5 speed, and my 300 with a lil under a 110K on it. People complain that when they get old they have trouble hitting 60, I know 110K isnt old for the inlines, but dam Im pulling hard to 85-90 MPH easy with my 31 inch tires and 3.55 LS rear end. My 31s are mud boggers, 8 ply sidewalls, goodyear wrangler mtrs, I mean just heavy *** tires. When i had my normal 4 ply "AT" tires, I would push first to about 31 MPH, and second to about 52, no tach haha. So tonight, heavy tires on, im cruising around with my buddies, and i go to go home, gotta impress the ladies right? Going about 10 mph, stop on it, take first to 20, and shift quickly and bark second, and then go to 40 and grab 3rd, barking again. I cant wait for some real money in like 6 years after i finish college and law school lol. Im talking a t56 6 spd, twin turbo, and 4.1s in the rear pushing roughly a 27-28 inch tire. I may not even need the turbos to dip into the 9s. I mean the gearing is gonna be a little closer than stock, and the 4.1s should be good for a .3tenth improvement, and with the heavy tires i can still run an 11.3. The tires should be good for a good .2-.3 at least, and like i said, gearing is everything. Now i dont know, a mid 10 is fine for my truck, but dam, itd be nice.
As for my mods.
2 air filters on stock intake pipes,
flowmaster cat back
electric fan
and dam, when your talking to your friends, your like yea, i got dual shorty headers(stock exhaust manifolds) dual throttle bodies(stock)high flow cats, dam i talk alot of crap haha. Maybe i need some more mods, still want a 272/282 duration cam, some bigger better injectors, and ram air haha.
I raced my buddy who had a 460 79 bronco and won...but thats becuase he topped out at about 65 and mine will do 90, lol. He smoked me off the start but the ol 300 6 just motored passed him about a mile or 2 up the road, lol.

sounds like my best friend and a buddy of mine. my friend has a 99 f150 with a 4.6, K&N fipk and a flowmaster cat back. my buddys mom has a late 90's or early 00's ford winstar. They were late for bailing hay, so they were racing on the way there. my friend smoked him on the start, then his truck is governed at 100 mph, and the minivan tops off at 120. He was going 100, just cruisin, then the mini van just crept along a head of him. We give him crap all the time for that. "shut up, your truck got smoked by a mini van..." I'm trying to convince him to get a chip, so he can get 20ish more h.p. and it wont top off at 100 any more.
I'v tryed to race mine before and it just never works. With that 5 spd i can do one heck of a burn out in 1st and bark them goin into second but after that its all over.
i have got the offy and header swap done, still have not got the tune down but it will swing the tach right past the red line if i'm not watching really close. can't spin the 295/40/20s after a shift but the rear does give one good hop, haven't raced any one yet but i think i can run with 6 cylinder cars now not just the 4 bangers
