optimal exhaust

Hello all,
I am looking to redo my exhaust and want to know the best way to do it. A buddy of mine has a shop and will make me anything i want. I just want to know how big. i want a single or dual?, straight pipe. i am thinking 4 inches for the pipe but what i dont know is what to do with the downpipe. i hear that if you go larger then the stock 3'' you lose torque on the low end, seeing that i have a 6-spd i want all the torque i can get, any ideas???

Thanks

Marc L

With a bigger downpipe, you may lose off-idle response, but as soon as it is moving, there is no loss of torque. According to Dale Isley at Tymar, he has dynoed many, many PSDs and has found absolutely no loss of torque with a 4 inch DP.

I have a 4" down pipe. It takes a little more throttle to get it moving from its 750rpm idle - but then it more than makes up for it after the revs get higher than, oh, 900rpm or so by being more responsive above that.

Why would a 4" DP cause loss of torque?
If it is a backpressure issue the turbo will provide all you need
