I just bought an Explorer 2005. When I drive with the A/C on there is a distinctly audible click (every 10 to 15 seconds or so) coming from the center dash. This clicking is not there when driving w/o A/C so I assume it's related to the operation of the A/C. It sounds like a relay switch. I brought it to dealer twice. They said it's normal but it bugs the hell out of me. Is there anyone out there with a 2005 Explorer whose A/C doesn't make these clicking sounds?
My 2005 sport trac does the same thing!! It's the A/C clutch engaging and disengaging every 15 seconds or so. I just left a joke of a dealer with that concern as well. I am going to find out if this is normal or not. In my experience with A/C it is a sign of a clog in the system and is not normal.

My AC blower does not hum - not yet anyway - I was told by the dealer it was the relay making the clicking sound. I think I will write a letter to FORD and post their reply - if they ever do.
i am having the same problem with my 2004 that just started happening its in being seen by the dealership for the 4th time (i have only owned it for a month and have so many things going wrong with it that i am being told is NORMAL) NORMAL my ***..... anyways I will let you know what i find out. I already reported this dealer to the ford service center..
You have a low pressure and a high pressure switch in the system. The clutch cycles on and off when either of these limits are reached. Too low and you have a leak and running without feon and oil to the compressor and the compressor will burn up. Too high and you obviously over pressurize the system. There should be some hysterisis between high and low, a pressure range that the system likes to run at. If this range gets too small, the compressor clutch will click on and of too often. I'm not sure what the specs are for your trucks but 10-15 second switches might be OK. Here in Phoenix, I never hear mine switch on/off. Either the blower is on full blast all the time so I an't hear it or it's just too damn hot here and the system neve gets too high a pressure (probably do to a low charge).
