Question ranger cluch concern

i just bought a 1991 ford ranger 4x4 4.0L. the person that slod it to me told me about a transmission and cluch concern. i found that the tanmission shifts hard. i checked the cluch fuild, low i filled it up and retested. i got a little better cluch pedal and it seemed to shift aliitle easer. but still very hard almost like bad sinkrows in the transmission, but i looked furth into concern. i had some one push the cluch down while i watch for engine conpartment. i seen the whole cluch system that bolted under brake booster moving. also found fuild near area. i pulled back the carpet on the driver side floor board and found the fire wall the be cracked where the cluch unit bolts. it looks like someone tryed to repair it ounce but didnt do a good job. i made steal plates to reenforce the fire wall on both sides but my question now is the right term for the part there that is leaking, also is this common on these rangers. and did ford recall or put a tsb out on this concern. oh ya that part that is leaking is it really hard to replace like remove trans or something like that? thanks joe

Its not common for them to break there but I have read of a few that have. The maser cylinder is what I beleive you are talking about and if it is leaking yes it will be hard to shift. They are not expensive about $40 in most auto stores but they are a pain to bleen once you reinstall one. Talking to another guy at work who just did his and he told me about what he had to do with taking it loose, turning it so the air will work out etc. I have an easier way to do it and it is less hassle as you are under the dash anyhow.

as to removing it, you have to take the push rod off the clutch pedal under the dash, remove the roll pin holding the line to the transmission (do not cut this line), take the 2 bolts/nuts off holding the master to the firewall. then wiggle the pieces out and reverse the procedure. to bleed fill the resevoir, and then pump a few strokes on the master. then take the piston out by pulling the circlip that holds it into the master a little way to let air out, reinstall the piston and pump a few times on the piston, pull the piston out a little till the air escapes and a little fluid drains, push back in, install the circlip, install the push rod to the clutch pedal arm bleed the system and you are done. But 1st buy a service manual at one of the auto stores (checkers, autozone etc) and read how to do this.
