Which Shoe First?

Hello Brake Experts<

I am installing for the 2nd time shoes on a 89 F350 single wheel.

The Chiltons manual is lame at best as far as pictures, so My questions:

1. The bigger shoe(Primary) goes towards the Rear end of the truck?

2. The metal reinforcement on the top of the shoes should be facing out towards the installer?

I use the truck for plowing and one of my shoes cracked the asbestos. so it was dragging and warped. They have been on the truck less than 8 months with minimal mileage, maybe 2000 at best.

I did put new wheel cylinders and turned the drums at a machine shop.

Thanks for any tips.

I have always been told that the larger shoe goes to the rear, mainly because it's the first to grab due to tire rotation

Short shoe primary, long shoe secondary unless they changed the last 40 years.

The BIG shoe goes in the BACK. That's how I always remember it.

You're correct about the metal reinforcement. Just remember to put the cable guide on the right shoe. That one has bitten me a few times.

Inspect the backing plate for grooves worn into the raised pads the shoe lands on and must slide across in operation.

The large shoe goes on the rear and the shoes are stamped "This side out".
