17's to 16's

I have a 2000 5.4 Supercab Lariat 2wd 3.55/LS towing package. From the factory it comes with the 17's. I never got to tow with the factory 2wd tire size before I upgraded to the factory 4wd size, so I have no comparison. I have no idea how long we will keep this truck so upgrading the gears wouldn't be worth it. It pulls good but I have to keep it in drive all the time, even with a empty 16ft flat bed. I've thought about maybe trading with someone and getting 16's, don't know how much that would help if any. What do you think?

You're probably dropping the overall tire diameter about 5% if you stick to the factory recommended 16" tire size. Will provide some benefit, but hard to quantify.
